Residents Receive Research Scholarships

July 15, 2026

Research Scholarships for 2026–2028 have been awarded to six residents pursuing careers in academic surgery. These scholarships, supported through the generosity of Fellows, Chapters, and friends of the College, offer $60,000 over 2 years.

The recipients are:

  • Research project: Unraveling the Molecular Mechanisms Behind Sexual Dimorphism in Gastric Cancer

Cintia Mayumi Sakurai Kimura, MD, PhD, MPH, Stanford University in California

  • Research project: Pilot Randomized Control Trial of Dietary Prehabilitation to Enhance Microbiome Resilience in Colorectal Surgery

Frances Morales, MD, MS, Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston

  • Research project: Intestinal Fibrosis Drives Tonic Contraction of the Aganglionic Bowel in Hirschsprung Disease

Praneet Polineni, MD, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois

  • Research project: Development of a Proteomics-Based Biomarker Assay for Early Prediction of Decompensation in Cirrhosis

Carter Prentice, MD, University of California, Los Angeles David Geffen School of Medicine

  • Research project: Validating Artificial Intelligence-Based Surgical Skill Assessment for Robotic Hiatal Hernia Repair Using a Deep Learning Vision Transformer Model

Marshall Wallace, MD, The University of Utah in Salt Lake City

  • Research project: Implementation of Multicenter Standardized Pediatric Post-Trauma Mental Health Screening Using a Statewide Pediatric Trauma Network
